Head Of Training And Trials Autonomous Systems at National Oceanography Centre

James Burris has a diverse work experience in the field of marine technology and autonomous systems. James began their career as a Hydrographic Surveyor at FUGRO SURVEY MIDDLE EAST in 2002. From 2004 to 2010, they worked as a Senior Seismic Navigator at CCG-Veritas, where they were responsible for navigation and troubleshooting equipment during seismic surveys.

In 2010, James joined NERC as an Ocean Engineering Tech, maintaining and preparing various oceanographic equipment. James later became an Underwater Glider Engineer and Applied Scientist, focusing on unmanned underwater gliders and surface vehicles. During this time, they also managed calibration records for sensors mounted on gliders.

From 2015 to 2017, James served as the Head of Asub (AUV) Operations Group at NERC National Oceanography Centre, working to improve the operational reliability of autonomous underwater vehicles. James also developed a training strategy to expand the capabilities of the operations group.

In 2017, James joined Blue Ocean Monitoring as a Marine Systems Engineer, contributing to the development of marine autonomous systems.

Most recently, they have been the Head of Training and Trials Autonomous Systems at the National Oceanography Centre since February 2022.

James Burris completed their education at the University of Plymouth. From 1998 to 2001, they pursued a degree in Underwater Science BSc (Hons). Following this, in 2001 to 2002, they obtained a PG Cert in Hydrographic Surveying.
