Dr. Thomas M. Aaberg, Jr. finished his undergraduate training at Dartmouth College, received an engineering degree from Dartmouth’s Thayer School of Engineering, and
attended medical school at the University of Wisconsin. He completed his ophthalmology residency training, vitreoretinal surgical fellowship, along with the prestigious chief residency position at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, University of
Miami. Following this he completed an ocular oncology fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco.
After completing his training, Dr. Aaberg became the Director of the Ocular Oncology Unit and the Director of Ocular Photography and Ultrasonography at Emory University,
and the Atlanta Veterans Administration Hospital’s Retina Service Director. In 2001, Dr. Aaberg moved to Michigan and joined Associated Retinal Consultants.
In 2008, he founded Retina Specialists of Michigan which over 10 years has grown to be the largest Vitreoretinal practice in West Michigan. He has been an investigator in numerous clinical trials and authored peer-reviewed articles and textbook chapters. He completed the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Leadership Development Program in 2007, and was president of the
Michigan Society of Eye Physician and Surgeons in 2017, received a Senior Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology in 2019, and has served as councilor to the AAO for both the Retina Society and Michigan Society of Eye
Physicians and Surgeons, is part of the Executive committee for the Collaborative Ocular Oncology Group, is an adjunct clinical professor at Michigan State University, is a committee member for the Kent County Medical Society Legislative Committee, and
founded the Foundation for Vision Research in 2018.
He is an active member of the American Academy of
Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retinal Specialists, Michigan Society of Eye Physicians, The Retina Society, and the International Society of Ocular Oncology.
His passion for teaching and research has been clearly demonstrated throughout his 20-plus-year career.
