Director, Content Acquisition & Operations at Newsela

Shelby Marter has gained a diverse range of work experience throughout their career. Shelby began their career as an Assistant to the University Policies and Procedures Coordinator at Michigan Technological University, where they also served as an Orientation Leader and a Student Editor for University Marketing and Communications. Shelby further developed their skills as a Multiliteracies Center Coach, leading study teams and writing groups for core education courses.

Shelby then moved on to MCIS (Marshfield Clinic Information Services), where they worked as a Solutions Analyst Intern, collaborating with software developers and business analysts to map software integration workflows and perform usability tests.

After their time at MCIS, Shelby joined Canterbury House Campus Ministry as a Grant Writing & Development Assistant. In this role, they researched funding initiatives, wrote grant proposals, and interviewed stakeholders to better meet the needs of the community.

Next, Shelby worked as a Technical Writing Intern at the Center for Technology and Training (Michigan Technological University). Shelby organized cross-functional initiatives, wrote instructional documentation, designed promotional content, and conducted usability testing.

Following their internship, Shelby joined Handshake as a Technical Writer - Sales Contracts, where they created documentation aligning product functionality with customer needs. Shelby then transitioned to Customer Support & Operations, providing training resources and partnering with university partners to address technical product questions and issues. Finally, they became a University Partnership Manager, collaborating with university partners to support student success.

Currently, Shelby is at Newsela, where they have held multiple roles. Shelby started as a Manager, Content Partnerships, fostering relationships with content providers and negotiating licensing expansions. Shelby then became a Senior Manager, Content Acquisition, overseeing a team and scaling the partnership management program. Currently, they serve as the Director, Content Acquisition & Operations.

Shelby Marter attended Michigan Technological University from 2013 to 2017, where they pursued a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Technical and Scientific Communication. Additionally, they earned a Global Technological Leadership Certificate during this time.
