Mia Birdsong is a prominent activist, author, and leader in social policy and community building. As the Founder and Executive Director of Next River since September 2021, Mia Birdsong focuses on cultivating conversations and resources that support diverse communities toward a liberated future. Serving as a Senior Fellow at the Economic Security Project and author of "How We Show Up: Reclaiming Family, Friendship, and Community," Mia Birdsong advocates for deeper connections in a time when many feel isolated despite having social networks. Previous roles include Fellow in the Family Centered Social Policy Program at New America and Co-Director of Family Story, where efforts were directed at reshaping the narrative around family life in America. As Co-founder of Canerow, Mia Birdsong worked to empower children of color through inclusive media. Prior to these positions, leadership was demonstrated as Vice President of the Family Independence Initiative. Mia Birdsong holds a Bachelor's degree from Oberlin College.
