Julian Hartley has extensive experience in the healthcare sector, with their most recent role as Chief Executive of NHS Providers, starting in February 2023. Prior to this, they served as Chief Executive of Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust from October 2013 to February 2023. Julian also held the position of Managing Director at NHS Improving Quality from October 2012 to October 2013. Julian served as Chief Executive of University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust from April 2009 to October 2012, and as Chief Executive of Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust from December 2005 to March 2009. Julian's career in healthcare leadership began as Chief Executive of Tameside and Glossop PCT from October 2002 to November 2005.
Julian Hartley began their education at Bingley Grammar School, where they studied from 1980 to 1985. Julian then attended Durham University from 1985 to 1988, earning a BA Hons degree in English Language and Literature. Following this, they enrolled at the University of Cambridge from 1988 to 1989 to pursue a Postgraduate Certificate in Education. Later, they returned to Durham University from 1995 to 1997 to obtain a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree.
