Kari Skjånes has a diverse range of work experience in the research field. Kari started their career as a Research Assistant at the Institute of Biological Sciences in Wales in 1993. Kari then worked as a Department Engineer at the Department of Microbiology at the University of Bergen in 1994. In 1995, they served as a Study Manager at Terra Environmental Laboratory AS. Kari continued their research career as a Researcher at Aquateam - Norsk vannteknologisk senter AS from 1996 to 1997. Kari then worked at Colifast Systems ASA as a Researcher from 1997 to 1999 and later became a Senior Researcher at Colifast AS from 1999 to 2001. During their tenure at Colifast AS, they started their PhD and successfully completed it in 2006 while working as a PhD candidate at NIVA. Kari then joined the University of Bergen as a Researcher from 2007 to 2008. In 2006, they also had the opportunity to work as a Guest Researcher at Uppsala Universitet. Since 2008, they have been working as a Researcher at NIBIO Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research.
Kari Skjånes obtained their Bachelor's degree in Microbiology and their Master's degree in Microbiology from the University of Bergen (UiB) between 1989 and 1996. Later, they completed their PhD in Algae technology at the University of Bergen (UiB) from 2002 to 2011.
