Matt Koskela

Matt Koskela has extensive work experience in various roles related to data systems, data engineering, and marine systems engineering. Matt is currently working as the Director of Data Systems at Ocean Exploration Trust since February 2022, where they oversee the organization's data systems. Prior to this, they served as the Director of Data Engineering at the same company from June 2020 to February 2022.

Before joining Ocean Exploration Trust, Matt worked as a Marine Systems Engineer at Innovasea from March 2015 to June 2020. In this role, they led various systems engineering initiatives focused on underwater feeding and data transmission in offshore sites.

From July 2013 to March 2015, Matt worked as a Marine Systems Engineer at Ocean Farm Technologies. Here, they guided the development and implementation of monitoring and control systems for open ocean aquaculture facilities.

Earlier in their career, Matt worked at Northrop Grumman as an Engineering Program Manager from March 2010 to June 2013. Matt led multi-disciplined engineering teams in the design, production, delivery, and commissioning of navigation and machinery control products for various programs. Additionally, they served as a Technical Team Lead for the Deepwater National Security Cutter program.

Matt started their career in the US Navy, where they held roles such as SSBN Scheduler and Asst. Force Protection Officer from January 2007 to November 2007. Matt also served as a Submarine Division Officer from May 2002 to December 2006, where they were responsible for the installation, operation, and maintenance of radio and electronic equipment.

Matt Koskela earned a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Marine Engineering from Maine Maritime Academy between 1998 and 2002. Later, in 2012, they attended the University of Virginia, where they pursued a Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) degree in Systems Engineering, completing it in 2013. Additionally, Koskela obtained the Engineer-In-Training certification from the Virginia Board for Architects, Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, Certified Interior Designers and Landscape Architects in October 2011. In April 1999, they also obtained a SCUBA Diver certification from NAUI.
