James Coffman has a comprehensive work experience in various roles and positions. James started their career as a Machinist Mate 3rd Class (MM3) in the US Navy from 1982 to 1983. James then progressed through different positions such as Division Officer, Auxiliaries and Electrical (A&E), Division Officer, Combat Information Center (CICO), and Division Officer, Fire Control (FCO) from 1989 to 1993.

James also served as a Command and Control Warfare Analyst from 1993 to 1995. James pursued graduate studies in IT Management from 1996 to 1998 and Computer Science from 2000 to 2001. James later became the Branch Head, IT Plans and Policies from 1998 to 2000.

In 2001, James served as a Test Director for Afloat Network Security before becoming the Afloat C4I Systems Installation Officer from 2002 to 2004. James then became the Section Head, Satellite Communications, OPNAV N6 from 2004 to 2007.

Following their tenure in the US Navy, James joined Systems Technology Forum, Ltd. (STF) in 2007 as a Program Manager for Navy Networks & Communications until 2009. James then returned to the US Navy as the Afloat Network Requirements Officer, OPNAV N2/N6 from 2009 to 2010.

From 2010 to 2011, James worked as the Head of Enterprise IT, OPNAV N2/N6, and from 2011 to 2013, they served as the Deputy, Navy Networks, OPNAV N2/N6. Subsequently, they became the Head of Resilient Networking, OPNAV N2/N6 from 2013 to 2016.

Their most recent work experience is as the Chief Information Officer (CIO) of OPNAV N1 in the US Navy from 2016 to 2020. Currently, James Coffman holds the role of Program Manager in the Common Data Fabric at Volant Associates, where they have been working since 2020.

James Coffman completed their Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science at Rice University from 1983 to 1988. James then pursued further education and obtained a Master's Degree in Computer Science from the Naval Postgraduate School, where they studied from 2000 to 2001. Before that, from 1996 to 1998, James also received another Master's Degree, this time in Information Technology Management, from the Naval Postgraduate School.
