Joel Gibbard MBE began their career in 2011 as an Applications Engineer at National Instruments. In 2013, they founded the Open Hand Project, an initiative to make advanced prosthetic hands more accessible to amputees. The project was funded with a successful crowdfunding campaign and ran for around one year. In 2014, Joel co-founded Open Bionics with the goal of bringing advanced, accessible bionic arms to the market. The Hero Arm, which is available in the UK, USA, France, Australia, and New Zealand, is revolutionizing the prosthetics industry with scalable design and manufacturing of bespoke products and a user-centered design approach.
Joel Gibbard MBE attended Backwell School from 2001 to 2008. Joel then attended the University of Plymouth, where they obtained a BEng (Hons) in Robotics between 2008 and 2011. In 2014, they attended the University of California, Berkeley, Haas School of Business for an 8 Week Accelerator in Organizational Leadership.
