Richard Baraniuk has extensive work experience in the field of electrical and computer engineering. Richard started their career at Rice University in 1992 and held the position of Victor E. Cameron Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering until 2021. Richard then transitioned to the role of C. Sidney Burrus Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, which they currently hold. In 1999, Baraniuk founded Connexions, where they served as Founder and Director until 2012. In 2012, they founded and became the Director of OpenStax.

Richard Baraniuk completed their Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Manitoba from 1983 to 1987. Richard then pursued a Master's degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1987 to 1988. Following this, Richard obtained their PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where they studied from 1988 to 1992. Additionally, Richard engaged in postdoctoral research in Signal Processing at the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon. The exact duration of their postdoctoral studies is not provided.
