Robert K. Elder has been working in the media industry since 2007, when they began teaching as an Adjunct Professor/Lecturer at Northwestern University/Medill School of Journalism. In 2009, they founded Odd Hours Media, LLC, a media company specializing in TV production, publishing, multimedia projects and consulting. In 2010, they became Regional Editor at Patch.com in Chicago for the AOL Huffington Media Group. From 2012 to 2013, they were Managing Editor at DNAinfo.com Chicago. During this time, they also served as Editor of the Lake County region for the Chicago Sun-Times Media and Vice President of Digital Content and Editor-in-Chief of Sun-Times Media Local from 2013 to 2015. In 2015, they became the Executive Director of Digital Product Development & Innovation at Crain Communications. In 2018, they were President and Publisher at Blockchain News and from 2019 to 2022, they were Chief Digital Officer at Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. Currently, Robert K. Elder is President & CEO of Outrider.org, where they are responsible for the leadership, strategic execution, and overall management of the organization.

Robert K. Elder attended Billings Senior High School before completing their Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Journalism and Communication from the University of Oregon between 1994 and 2000. Robert K. then went on to earn their Master of Business Administration - MBA from Saint Xavier University in 2020.
