Craig Booth

Chief Technology Officer at Packback

Craig Booth has extensive experience in the technology and engineering fields. Theircareer began in 2007 as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Computational Astrophysics at Leiden University, where they were a core member of the OverWhelmingly Large Simulations (OWLS) team. Craig played a leading role in developing the C code employed in one of the largest cosmological, hydrodynamic simulation projects ever performed, and led a variety of scientific projects on diverse topics.

In 2011, Craig Booth was an Astrophysicist and KICP Associate Fellow at the University of Chicago. Here they contributed to the development of new massively parallel, object oriented numerical codes for the simulation of reactive flows, allowing the modeling of new physical phenomena for the first time. Craig also led the data visualization efforts for a large international collaboration and developed models that describe the distribution of gas in the Universe.

In 2013, Craig Booth joined Narrative Science as a DevOps Manager, where they were responsible for infrastructure, security, DevOps, and IT. Craig designed and built cloud-based REST API, transforming the core platform by growing throughput 100x, cutting costs by 20%, and maintaining 99.9% uptime. Craig also collaborated with recruiting to implement rigorous, value-based, reliable (metrics-driven) hiring process for engineers.

In 2015, Craig Booth joined General Assembly as an Instructor (SQL), teaching a two-day bootcamp on SQL which takes absolute beginners through the basics of SQL to an ability to write queries with confidence.

Finally, in 2018, Craig Booth joined Packback as Chief Technology Officer and VP of Engineering. Craig managed and mentored the engineering team that was responsible for growing Packback's platform, and improved reliability and uptime by implementing a 24/7 software support on-call rotation, allowing Packback to maintain a 99.9% uptime.

Craig Booth has a strong educational background. Craig obtained a PhD in Computational Cosmology from Durham University between 2003 and 2007. Before that, they earned an MSci in Physics and Astronomy from the University of Nottingham between 1999 and 2003. In addition to their academic qualifications, Craig Booth has obtained several certifications, including Finance for Startups from Coursera in 2020, Offensive Security Wireless Professional from Offensive Security in 2020, Google Cloud Platform Big Data and Machine Learning Fundamentals from Coursera in 2019, Serverless Data Analysis with Google BigQuery and Cloud Dataflow from Coursera in 2019, Google Cloud Platform Fundamentals: Core Infrastructure from Coursera in 2018, Malicious Software and its Underground Economy: Two Sides to Every Story from Coursera in 2014, Internet History, Technology, and Security from Coursera in 2013, and Amazon Web Services Solutions Architect - Associate from Amazon Web Services in 2018.
