John Murphy

Chief Operating Officer at Patrn

John Murphy has a long and varied work experience. John began their career in 2001 as a Research Assistant at the Albany Research Center, Department of Energy. Here, they performed electrochemical and tribological testing on tungsten and tungsten coated Si wafers, and evaluated wear rates of tool steels subjected to various types of mechanical abrasion. In 2008, they moved to Manpower Inc. as a Research Assistant, where they conducted failure analysis on faulty tools and performed routine mechanical testing on incoming steel wire. That same year, they began their academic career at the University of Texas at Dallas as a PhD Candidate, where they optimized the fabrication of thin film CdTe sensors for charged particle and neutron detection, modeled system level simulations of large area panel neutron detectors, and identified polycrystalline CdTe as a novel and economical semiconductor material for thin film charged particle and neutron detectors. John then went on to become a Postdoctoral Researcher at the same university, where they researched and developed advanced semiconductor radiation detectors and energy harvesting systems, and prepared and presented proposals for new projects to lab management and subject matter experts. In 2015, they joined Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory as a Research and Development Engineer and Postdoctoral Researcher, where they fabricated and characterized designed materials, devices, and systems to validate theory and simulate charge transport in a variety of semiconductor materials and devices, and presented results at conferences and workshops. In 2021, they became Chief Operating Officer at Patrn LLC, a micro-blogging platform for crowd-funding NFTs, and also began working as a Nuclear Engineer at Holtec International. Finally, in 2022 they became Co-founder at Tabby Labs Inc.

John Murphy obtained a Bachelor of Science in Materials Science from Drexel University between 2001 and 2007. John then went on to receive a Master's degree in Materials Science from The University of Texas at Dallas between 2008 and 2011. Following this, they obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Materials Science and Engineering from The University of Texas at Dallas between 2011 and 2014. Additionally, they obtained a certification in Introduction to MCNP5 & MCNPX from Los Alamos National Laboratory in October 2010.
