Anwar Raja has extensive work experience in the oil and gas industry. ANWAR started their career at PETRONAS CARIGALI in 1977 as a Reservoir Engineer and later served as Head of the Gas Development Unit and Head of the East Malaysia Oil Development Unit. ANWAR also held the position of Senior Manager in the Technology Management Unit, where they formulated PETRONAS Carigali's technology strategy and facilitated the acquisition of emerging technologies.
In 2003, Anwar joined Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS as the Program Head for Geoscience & Petroleum Engineering. During their time there, they managed the program and led various research initiatives.
Anwar then moved on to PetroMalaysia in 2007, initially serving as a Vice President, responsible for developing and implementing strategic plans and ensuring regulatory compliance. ANWAR eventually became the CEO of PetroMalaysia, where they were in charge of overseeing operations, setting annual goals and objectives, and maintaining a competent workforce.
Anwar Raja began their education in 1969 at the University of Madras, where they pursued a Bachelor of Technology degree in Chemical Engineering. ANWAR completed this program in 1974. Following this, from 1974 to 1975, Raja attended the University of Leeds to obtain a Postgraduate Diploma in Fuel & Combustion Science. Continuing their educational journey, they enrolled at Heriot-Watt University in 1975 and graduated in 1977 with a Master of Science by Research in Chemical Engineering. Lastly, Raja pursued a Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering from Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1, which they completed in 1995.
