Dr. Joseph Shin is an assistant professor of medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine and the Cornell Center for Health Equity, and an attending physician at New York Presbyterian Hospital with a passion for advancing human rights through education, advocacy, and research. He served as co-medical director for PHR’s oldest medical school asylum clinic, the Weill Cornell Center for Human Rights, overseeing clinical operations for medical forensic evaluations for asylees and survivors of torture.
Dr. Shin also conducts medical-legal advocacy in partnership with New York Lawyers for the Public Interest and the Legal Aid Society in correctional and immigration detention settings highlighting abuses and disparities in healthcare. In addition, with support from the Cornell Institute for Primary Care Innovations, Dr. Shin conducts research studying barriers to identification and effective linkage to services for trafficking victims.
Prior to joining Cornell, Dr. Shin completed his medical education and residency at NYU School of Medicine, where he worked with Dr. Allen Keller and the NYU/Bellevue Program for Survivors of Torture for over 10 years.
