Sarah is currently working at Pleno Inc. as the Head of Applications, a position they started in November 2022. Before that, they worked at Illumina for over a decade from 2011 to 2022. At Illumina, they held various roles, including Associate Principal Scientist, Senior Staff Scientist, Staff Scientist, Senior Scientist, Scientist II, and Scientist I.
Prior to Illumina, Sarah worked as a Postdoctoral Scientist at Prognosys Biosciences from March 2010 to September 2011. Sarah also worked as a Post-doctoral Researcher at the University of California Berkeley from an unknown start date to March 2010. During their time at Berkeley, they were also a Graduate Student, where they developed and optimized a metabolic orthogonal label of RNA in Saccharomyces cerevisiae and established protocols for specifically purifying labeled populations of mRNA using magnetic bead-based systems.
Sarah's earlier experience includes being an IAESTE Fellow at State University of Campinas in 2002 and an Undergraduate Howard Hughes Fellow at Purdue University from 1999 to 2002. At Purdue, they characterized the relationship between TRP protein and the light-induced response of calcium permeable light-activated channels in D. melanogaster using electroretinagrams in a panel of mutants. Overall, Sarah Munchel Shultzaberger has a strong background in scientific research and leadership roles.
Sarah Munchel Shultzaberger completed their education with a Ph.D. in Molecular and Cell Biology from the University of California, Berkeley, spanning from 2003 to 2009. Prior to that, from 1999 to 2002, they acquired a B.S. and B.A. degree from Purdue University in Genetic Biology and Spanish, with a minor in Chemistry.
