Gonzalo Peña-Castellanos has a diverse and extensive work experience highlighted by their various roles in different companies. Starting in 2007, they worked as a Guest Lecturer at the Universidad Industrial de Santander. Gonzalo then joined DHI France as an Intern - Fluvial Modeling, where they gained experience in numerical simulations and hydraulic models.
In 2008, Gonzalo became a Systems Administrator at Sistemas Hidráulicos y Sanitarios Ltda, where they managed network infrastructure and provided technical support. Gonzalo also had a brief stint at the IHE Delft Institute for Water Education as part of a special program.
In 2012, Gonzalo joined Anaconda, Inc. as a Software Engineer, where they worked on the Product Team and served as the Technical Lead for Anaconda Navigator, a graphical desktop application. Being involved in this project allowed him to develop expertise in Qt and PyQt.
Gonzalo then returned to Sistemas Hidráulicos y Sanitarios Ltda in 2015 as a Project Engineer. In this role, they contributed to river modeling, data analysis, and technical support. Gonzalo also designed and implemented websites using Django-CMS.
In the same year, Gonzalo became involved with the Python Software Foundation, serving as a member of the Grants Workgroup. Gonzalo reviewed proposals for grants and helped make funding decisions related to conferences and workshops.
Starting in 2019, Gonzalo joined Quansight, where they worked as a Senior Software Engineer I. Gonzalo was an active member of the Quansight Diversity, ethics & inclusion committee. Additionally, they were a core developer for JupyterLab, focusing on internationalization and localization efforts.
In 2020, Gonzalo became a Core Developer for Project Jupyter, specifically working on JupyterLab and various other projects. Their role included adding internationalization to JupyterLab's backend and frontend.
Throughout their career, Gonzalo has demonstrated their strong technical skills and their commitment to open-source projects in the field of scientific computing.
Gonzalo Peña-Castellanos began their education journey by obtaining a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Civil Engineering from Universidad Industrial de Santander, which they completed from 2000 to 2006.
Gonzalo then pursued further studies and earned a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Hydroinformatics and Water Management from Brandenburgische Technische Universität Cottbus-Senftenberg in 2009. In the same year, they also completed an MSc degree in Hydroinformatics and Water Management from Newcastle University.
From 2010 to 2012, Gonzalo attended the IHE Delft Institute for Water Education and completed another MSc degree. This time, their field of study was Municipal Water and Infrastructure - Sanitary Engineering.
Gonzalo started a PhD at the IHE Delft Institute for Water Education in 2013, specializing in Water Resources. However, they did not finish this degree and left in 2015.
In terms of certifications, Gonzalo obtained several related to their expertise. In 2019, they completed the Conda Essentials course from DataCamp. In 2018, they acquired the Intermediate Importing Data in Python, Intermediate Python, Introduction to Importing Data in Python, and Python Data Science Toolbox (Part 1) certificates from DataCamp.
In 2021 and 2022, Gonzalo pursued further education in various data science and deep learning domains. Gonzalo obtained certifications such as Cluster Analysis in Python, Introduction to Data Visualization with Matplotlib, Machine Learning with Tree Based models in Python, Statistical Thinking in Python (Parts 1 and 2), Supervised Learning with scikit-learn, Unsupervised Learning in Python, Data Manipulation with pandas, and Writing Functions in Python from DataCamp. Gonzalo also completed the Deep learning specialization from DeepLearning.AI and the courses Convolutional Neural Networks, Improving Deep Neural Networks: Hyperparameter Tuning, Regularization and Optimization, Structure Machine Learning Projects, and Sequence Models from Coursera.
Additionally, in 2022, Gonzalo obtained a Drone Pilot Certification/Curso de Piloto Profesional de Drones from APD Profesionales de Drones.
