James'sresponsibilities included developing game day protocols, managing a large production staff, and coordinating with broadcast partners to ensure accurate start times for events. James'scontributions in this role have had a lasting impact on the Pan American Games and Summer Olympics since 1999.

Before entering the entertainment and sports industry, James worked as a Senior Promotions Producer at CTV News from January 1995 to June 1998.

In 2016 and 2017, they took courses at MITx, specializing in Big Data Analytics & Social Physics. Earlier in their education, in 2000, James attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for Data, Economics, and Development Policy. James also pursued Skit & Improv Comedy Classes at Second City Training Center(s) in Toronto, Chicago, and Los Angeles from 1995 to 1997. Prior to this, they earned a Broadcast Arts & Engineering Degree from the Canadian National Institute of Broadcasting & Drama from 1993 to 1995, with a focus on Acting, Broadcasting, Radio & Television Production. James Nicol also briefly attended The University of Winnipeg in 1995 but did not complete a degree there. Lastly, they completed their secondary education at Lord Selkirk Regional Comprehensive Secondary High School from 1987 to 1991.
