Senior Electric Propulsion Architect

Full-time · Helsinki, FI

Job description

The Senior Electric Propulsion Architect will be joining the ReOrbit team in Helsinki to push forward the development of our propulsion systems for our Small Satcom project. This opportunity will enable you to be part of a very experienced team, embarking on the challenging mission of shrinking the size and reducing the cost of a GEO satellite while keeping its performance and life to its maximum capacity.

We are looking for someone who has previous experience working on electric propulsion systems mainly on GEO communications satellites, with a system-level perspective of propulsion. We are looking for a versatile engineer, who is confident to get on and get things done, big on teamwork and is flexible in their approach. We need someone who enjoys working with partners and suppliers and feels comfortable asking the difficult questions. This role will work alongside our existing propulsion engineers.  We are looking for a person that has gone through the entire process of designing, implementing and testing propulsion systems in the past.

Responsibilities

  • Mission requirements analysis including propulsion operation modes in all phases of the mission (i.e. Orbit Raising, GEO Station Keeping).

  • EPS trade-off analysis & subsystem architecture definition based on mission requirement analysis.

  • Definition and evaluation of Thruster layout and configuration options.

  • Familiarity with Thruster Pointing Mechanism alternatives (i.e. gimbals, arms), pros and cons, implementation constraints and operation/interfaces.

  • EPS requirement specification based on the previous analyses.

  • Propellant budget and allocation analysis, including alternatives for Propulsion operations in GEO.

  • Tool development to estimate maneuvers and fuel allocation.

  • Interfaces analysis (mechanical, thermal, electrical, system level, etc.).

  • Vendors contact and selection of components. Follow up on specification of purchases, analysis and acceptance of vendor test results.

  • Manufacturing, assembly, integration and test (MAIT) design, planning and follow up.

  • EPS Subsystem documentation (architecture, analysis and components).

  • Subsystem AIT plan (Assembly, Integration & Test) based on the architecture shall be developed.

Skills & Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years' working within propulsion engineering or similar areas such as Mechanical / Mechatronics within the GEO space industry (please note aerospace or aviation experience is not sufficient).

  • Knowledge and professional experience of electrical propulsion subsystems.

  • Experience in GEO communication satellite projects, including operations.

  • Ability to analyse data, derive conclusions, and manage design documentation as well as review and approve design changes.

  • Comfortable working closely with external vendors and consortium partners.

  • Enjoys working collaboratively as part of a team.

  • Fluent written and spoken skills in English.

What does ReOrbit do?

ReOrbit builds the foundation for the next generation of space applications by transforming satellites into truly intelligent, interconnected platforms, defined by software. Our satellite design philosophy revolves around the idea that satellites must network, communicate with each other and thus improve mission efficiency. How can this be achieved? Thanks to a flexible software-first architecture, where all these aspects are dealt with upfront in the mission concept, as integrated functionalities.

ReOrbit’s top-notch team of software engineers and system architects develop in-house software, procure hardware from the best-in-class suppliers, and seamlessly integrate the components to create flexible and secure satellites. Today, we are a rapidly growing company building a very strong multidisciplinary team to support our activities. We are headquartered in Helsinki, Finland with a subsidiary in Bariloche, Argentina.
