Phillip Compeau

Phillip Compeau has a diverse work experience in computational biology education and research. Phillip is currently working at the Computational Biology Department of Carnegie Mellon University, where they hold the role of Assistant Department Head and is responsible for directing the undergraduate program in computational biology. Phillip has also served as the assistant director of the MS in computational biology program. Additionally, they organize events for students in the department.

Compeau is an Associate Teaching Professor at Carnegie Mellon University, a position they have held since May 2020. Prior to that, they were an Assistant Teaching Professor from August 2015 to May 2020.

In 2021, Compeau founded and became the CEO of Philomath Press.

Before their roles at Carnegie Mellon University, Compeau worked as an instructor for the Bioinformatics Specialization on Coursera, provided by UC San Diego. Phillip has been involved in teaching and developing content for this specialization since November 2013.

Compeau is also a co-founder of Rosalind, an e-learning project in computational biology. Phillip helped design the concept of the website and oversaw the development of content.

During their time at the University of California, San Diego, Compeau worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher from September 2014 to July 2015. Prior to that, they were a Graduate Research Assistant from June 2010 to August 2014. Phillip also served as a teaching assistant and associate instructor in the mathematics and computer science departments at UC San Diego. In this role, they lectured in discussion sections, held office hours, and proctored/graded exams. Phillip especially focused on teaching lower division undergraduate courses.

Compeau has prior experience as a tutor and private educator, where they provided instruction in various mathematics subjects to students of different abilities, ranging from middle school students to undergraduate mathematics majors. Phillip worked in this role from August 2007 to 2014.

Phillip Compeau's education history starts in 2004 when they enrolled at Davidson College. Phillip obtained their Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics with High Honors in 2008. Following this, from 2008 to 2009, they pursued their Master of Advanced Study degree in Mathematics at the University of Cambridge. Continuing their academic journey, from 2009 to 2014, Phillip attended UC San Diego where they obtained their Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Mathematics. Currently, they are pursuing a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree in Business Administration and Management, General at Carnegie Mellon University's Tepper School of Business, with an expected completion date in 2024.
