Nigel Carpenter

Nigel Carpenter is a seasoned data science and actuarial professional with extensive experience in the insurance industry. Since March 2007, Nigel has served as the Chief Data Scientist at RSA, focusing on the development and application of Machine Learning and Big Data for pricing strategies across UK and International markets, notably pioneering the use of Gradient Boosting Machines in insurance pricing. Prior to this role, Nigel held several key positions at RSA, including Personal Actuarial & Statistics Director and Head of Actuarial Statistics & Data, overseeing technical pricing for various personal lines. Nigel's career also includes significant roles at Aviva, where responsibilities included leading actuarial teams and advising on technical reserves for a £3bn premium account, as well as serving as Regional Actuary for Aviva Singapore, providing actuarial guidance across multiple Southeast Asian markets. Nigel began the career as an Actuarial Analyst at Norwich Union, contributing to various reserving projects. Nigel holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from the University of Nottingham.
