Chris Szmurlo has extensive work experience in the field of planning and development. Chris began their career as an Undergraduate Research Assistant at the Department of Geography at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2011 and 2012. In 2013, they worked as a Planning Intern at the Department of Community Preservation and Development. Chris then continued their research assistant role in the Department of Geography, exploring the construction and impact of maps on our social world. In 2014, Chris worked as a Planning Intern at both the Department of Community Development and the Planning & Development Department. Since 2016, they have been employed at the Regional Transportation Authority of Northeastern Illinois (RTA), where they have held the positions of Senior Planner, Senior Analyst, and currently serves as the Principal Analyst.

Chris Szmurlo received a High School Degree from Northside College Preparatory High School in 2011. Following that, they attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from 2011 to 2015, earning a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Geography and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Urban Planning. Chris then pursued higher education at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where they obtained a Master of Urban Planning (MUP) degree in 2016.
