Bernard J. “Barney” Cassidy, JD, is Executive Vice President and General Counsel of Sana Biotechnology.

Barney served as General Counsel for Juno Therapeutics until its acquisition by Celgene in early 2018, after which he advised the USPTO as a member of the Patent Public Advisory Committee, taught Biomedical Law & Policy at the Seattle University School of Law, and studied at Harvard Law School as a Visiting Researcher. Before joining Juno, Barney served as General Counsel at both Tessera Technologies, where he was also President of Tessera Intellectual Property Corporation, and Tumbleweed Communications. Earlier, Barney practiced law at both Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom and Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati.

Barney earned a BA in Philosophy from the Jesuit House of Studies at Loyola University New Orleans, a MA in Philosophy from the University of Toronto, and a JD from Harvard Law School, where he was an editor of the Harvard Law Review and a research assistant to Professor Arthur R. Miller. After law school, he served as a law clerk to Judge John T. Noonan, Jr. of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
