John Bishop joined Cepheid as Chief Executive Officer and as a director in 2002 and became Chairman of the Board of Directors in 2013. He retired following its acquisition by Danaher for $4 billion in 2016. John was instrumental in Cepheid’s transformation and rapid growth into a leading molecular diagnostics company and oversaw the successful development and commercialization of its GeneXpert systems and line of test products.
Prior to his time at Cepheid from 1993 to 2002, John served as President, later President and Chief Executive Officer, and a director of Vysis, Inc., a genomic disease management company that was acquired by Abbott. Prior to Vysis John held senior executive positions at MicroProbe Corporation, Source Scientific Systems, and Gen-Probe, Inc.
In his earlier career John Bishop held various management positions between 1968 and 1984 at American Hospital Supply Company and its affiliates, including a three-year assignment in Japan as Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of International Reagents Corp., a joint venture between American Hospital Supply Company and Green Cross Corporation. He also served as a director of Conceptus from 2009 until 2013 when it was acquired by the Bayer Group.
John has been a member of the AdvaMed Dx Board, since 2010, and served as Chairman from 2013-2017. In 2011, he received the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year Northern California Award in the Life Sciences category.
