As Chief Science Officer to Sense, Robert brings his unparalleled experience in CMOS microelectronics, in particular readout electronics for CMOS image sensors and Single Photon Avalanche Diodes (SPADs). As Principal Engineer in VLSI Vision Ltd and STMicroelectronics Imaging Division Robert was part of a pioneering team developing the first CMOS image sensors now found in most modern digital cameras and smartphones. In his academic research, Robert invented SPAD image sensors in nanometer CMOS technologies leading to volume SPAD time-of-flight products, recently passing the 1 billion module milestone in STMicroelectronics FlightSense products. Robert currently holds a Professorship in Electronic Imaging at the University of Edinburgh where he leads a research group exploring medical, scientific, and high-speed imaging applications of SPAD technology. Robert is an ERC Advanced Research Fellow and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.
