Cindy Chung has over 17 years of work experience in the field of bioscience. Cindy began their career in 2002 as an Undergraduate Researcher at MIT in the Hamel Group. In 2003, they worked as a Research Intern at CuraGen Corporation, where they optimized additive concentration and projected scale-up parameters, as well as increased protein recovery in packed bed and expanded bed chromatography. Cindy then attended the University of Pennsylvania, where they worked as a Graduate Student in the Burdick Lab from 2004 to 2009. During this time, they developed hyaluronic acid hydrogels for applications in cartilage tissue engineering and performed chemical synthesis, photopolymerization, tissue dissection, chondrocyte isolation, animal studies, and engineered tissue analysis. From 2009 to 2013, they were a Postdoctoral Fellow at Stanford University in the Heilshorn and Pruitt Groups, where they developed advanced culture systems for embryonic stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes through engineered recombinant protein matrices and mechanical devices, and investigated matrix crosslinking density effects on cardiomyocyte differentiation and contractility. From 2013 to 2018, they were employed at Theranos, where they held the roles of Staff Scientist, Sr. Scientist, and Scientist. During this time, they executed feasibility studies for multiplexed nucleic acid amplification assays, evaluated molecular beacons for isothermal nucleic acid amplification, coordinated material compatibility and reagent stability testing, executed a clinical trial on capillary blood collection as project lead, optimized blood collection procedures for capillary blood collection, provided assay support for blood collection device development and 510(k) submission readiness, verified and validated hematology analyzers, developed flow-based complete blood count assay for lab developed test workflow and quality control protocols for high-throughput liquid handlers, and provided assay support for consumables testing. Since 2018, they have been employed at Kodiak Sciences as a Principal Scientist. In 2021, they joined Serán Bioscience, LLC as a Sr. Scientist.
Cindy Chung received their Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2004. Cindy then went on to receive their PhD in Biomaterials, Tissue Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 2009.
