Karl Diedrich has a diverse work experience in various fields including medical imaging, data science, software engineering, and environmental analysis. Karl is currently working as a Senior ML Engineer at Sirona Medical. Previously, Karl has worked at IBM Watson Health Imaging as a Data Scientist Image Processing, where they developed deep learning algorithms for detecting and localizing breast cancer and other diseases from radiology images. Karl also worked at BERG Health as a Senior Data Scientist, analyzing clinical, molecular, and image medical data for diagnosing and treating solid tumor cancers. Karl has experience in software development and analysis of pharmaceutical customer data during their tenure at PerkinElmer, Inc. Karl has also worked at AZE Technology Inc./Mebio Inc. as a Principal Engineer/VP Research, where they developed image analysis algorithms and commercialized radiology software tools. Karl started their career as a Doctoral Fellow at the University of Utah, Biomedical Informatics, where they developed a measure of arterial tortuosity phenotype in MRI images. Karl graduated with a PhD degree in Biomedical Informatics. Prior to that, they worked at Myriad Genetics as a Programmer III, developing automated nucleic acid analysis tools. Karl also has experience in environmental analysis as a Contract Scientist at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, where they analyzed microbiome in the environment to assess environmental toxicity and monitor bioremediation.
Karl Diedrich obtained a Ph.D. in Biomedical Informatics from the University of Utah School of Medicine, where they studied from 2007 to 2011. Prior to that, they pursued an MS in Molecular Biology at the University of Idaho from 1995 to 2000. From 1990 to 1992, they completed a BS in Biology at Eastern Washington University.
In addition to their formal education, Karl has obtained various certifications. Karl received certifications in Accelerated Deep Learning with GPU, Cloud Core, Data Analysis Using Python, Data Visualization Using Python, Deep Learning Essentials, Deep Learning using TensorFlow, Getting started with Microservices with Istio and IBM Cloud Kubernetes Service, IBM Automation: Compass, and IBM Mentor from IBM, all in September 2020. Karl also obtained certifications in Deep Learning Essentials with Keras, Deep Learning with Tensorflow, Deep Neural Networks with PyTorch, IBM AI Engineering Professional Certificate, IBM Mentor, Machine Learning with Apache Spark, Machine Learning with Python from Coursera in July 2020. Furthermore, they achieved certifications in Enterprise Design Thinking Practitioner, Applied Data Science with Python - Level 2, Deep Learning from IBM in November and October 2019, respectively. Lastly, Karl completed the Docker Essentials: A Developer Introduction certification from IBM in September 2019.
