Robert A. Spottswood was born in Key West, Florida. Mr. Spottswood graduated from Key West High School in 1975, the University of Florida in 1979 and the University of Miami, School of Law in 1982. As a partner in the Miami law firm of Taylor, Brion, Buker & Greene, Mr. Spottswood specialized in corporate law. While in Miami, Mr. Spottswood made successful investments in real estate, banking and broadcasting. Mr. Spottswood returned home to Key West in 1992 to create what would become the Keys largest hospitality company.
In the two-plus decades since, Spottswood Companies has grown to become one of the leading real estate development, property management and hospitality businesses in the Florida Keys. The company was responsible for the creation of the Hyatt Vacation Club and for the development of numerous timeshare, hotel and commercial properties including Hyatt Sunset Harbor, Hyatt Beach House, Hyatt Windward Pointe, Key West Marriott Beachside Hotel, Faro Blanco Resort & Yacht Club and many others. The company provides asset management to the legendary La Concha Hotel, a hotel once owned by the Spottswood family and made famous by luminaries such as Tennessee Williams and Ernest Hemingway.
Mr. Spottswood is a Director of First State Bank of the Florida Keys, a member of the Florida Council of 100, a Commissioner and Past Chairman of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Chairman of the American Resort Development Association, past member of the Judicial Nominating Committee for the Third District Court of Appeal and a past member of the Governor’s Commission on the Healthcare and Hospital funding.
Mr. Spottswood is an attorney, certified public accountant, Chartered Global Management Accountant, and a licensed real estate broker.
