As Chief Science Officer and Senior Vice President of Research and Development, Dr. Joseph (Josh) Boggs leads SPR’s scientists and biomedical engineers in developing minimally invasive devices and non-opioid treatments to address the needs of patients with pain and their treating physicians. With over 20 years in R&D, Dr. Boggs leverages his experience in science, technology, and business to advance SPR’s platform of patented peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) products and innovative enhancements.
Dr. Boggs has extensive experience developing R&D pipelines of patented technologies with competitive advantages to deliver safe and effective neuromodulation therapies to fill unmet clinical needs. Prior to his current work at SPR, he served as VP of R&D for NDI Medical, LLC, and led the development of next generation technology to treat multiple urological indications with NDI’s Medstim system, which was acquired by Medtronic in 2008.
Dr. Boggs has over 15 years of experience as a principal investigator for federally awarded peer-reviewed research grants and contracts from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Defense (DoD) to develop and evaluate medical devices that deliver therapeutic electrical stimulation. He has over 100 peer-reviewed publications, textbook chapters, and conference publications in addition to over 200 patents issued and pending.
He has received several awards for his work in neurostimulation and served two terms on the Secretary of Veterans Affairs’ Advisory Committee on Prosthetics and Special Disabilities Programs, which provides guidance on the research and development of rehabilitation technology, services, and other programs that serve Veterans with serious incapacities. Dr. Boggs also serves on NIH study sections, VA and DoD grant review panels, and the editorial board for a peer-reviewed journal.
Dr. Boggs received a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Virginia, his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Biomedical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University, and he conducted research at Duke University prior to joining industry.
