John Hartford has a strong background in technical writing, with extensive experience spanning over three decades. John started their career as a Technical Writer at ALLOY Computer Products, Inc., where they created and maintained documentation for LAN PC-Slave and tape backup products. John then transitioned to Netlink/AMNET, Inc., where they served as a Senior Technical Writer and was responsible for producing and managing the development of design and functional specifications for frame relay access devices.
Moving forward, Hartford joined Avici Systems as a Principal Technical Writer, taking on the additional role of Documentation Release Project Manager. During their tenure, they led a team of three writers and maintained the company's ISO 9000 documentation. John also created and maintained documentation for Avici's scalable core Terabit Switch Router, catering to a diverse audience that included carrier central-office and field-service technicians, in-house trainers, customer support, and engineers.
Following Avici Systems, Hartford worked at Extreme/Enterasys Networks as a Senior Technical Writer. Their responsibilities included migrating switch router documentation sets from FrameMaker to DITA and creating and maintaining documentation for multiple switch router and wireless product lines. Their projects encompassed a wide range of documentation types, such as firmware configuration guides, GUI-based user configuration guides, CLI references, release notes, application online help, hardware installation guides, and hardware quick references. John also implemented innovative solutions, including automating documentation rebranding and building multi-product single-source documentation sets.
Hartford then spent some time as a Contract Technical Writer at Teradyne, focusing on shorter-term assignments. Currently, they are employed at Symbotic, where they initially worked as a Contract Technical Writer before being promoted to Senior Technical Writer and later to Principal Technical Writer.
John Hartford has a Certificate in Electronics Technology from GTE Sylvania Technical School. John also studied Computer Technology/Computer Systems Technology at Tulsa Community College. Additionally, they pursued Music Theory and Composition at the University of Hartford, Hartt College of Music.
