Carlum Shiu

Director Regional Marketing And Scientific Affairs at Sysmex Asia Pacific

Carlum Shiu has over 20 years of work experience in the healthcare and life sciences industry. Starting in 1997, they worked as a Trainee Technician at The Health Protection Agency Culture Collections where they conducted quality control tests and developed a PCR assay. Carlum then pursued a PhD and worked as a Research Scientist at Hosei University and The National Institute for Medical Research, focusing on molecular pathogenesis of HIV-1.

In 2004, Carlum joined the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine as a Post-doctoral Fellow where they conducted a Phase 1 clinical trial on HIV-1 poxvirus-based therapeutic vaccines. Carlum collaborated with multiple research groups and played a crucial role in data coordination and manuscript preparation.

From 2008 to 2009, they served as a Consultant at Aegis Pacific Group, where they assisted in redesigning medical devices and restructuring marketing strategies for a wider healthcare market.

In 2010, Carlum joined Michael Ballantyne Consulting as a Consultant, providing market entry strategies for medical device, life science, and pharmaceutical companies entering the Japanese market.

Carlum then worked at QIAGEN as a Field Applications Specialist, supporting researchers and laboratorians in using QIAGEN's automated applications in the field of molecular diagnostics.

In 2013, they joined Abbott as a Scientific Affairs Manager, South Asia, providing scientific support for clinical diagnostics and managing relationships with key opinion leaders. Carlum then became a Medical Scientific Liaison Manager, Asia Pacific in 2016.

Currently, since 2017, Carlum Shiu is the Director of Regional Marketing and Scientific Affairs at Sysmex Asia Pacific.

Carlum Shiu obtained a BSc in Biological Sciences from the University of Birmingham from 1995 to 1999. Subsequently, from 1999 to 2000, Carlum pursued an MSc in Applied Molecular Biology of Infectious Diseases at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, U. of London. Finally, from 2000 to 2004, Carlum completed a PhD in Molecular Pathology at UCL.
