Schalk van Heerden has worked in the software engineering and development field since 2012. From 2018 to present, they have been a Senior Protocol Developer at Tari Labs, where they work on creating a new crypto coin and implementing software required for the base node, wallet, and miner. Most of the code is written in Rust and is open source. Prior to this, they were the Systems Development Engineering Manager and Software Engineer at ETA operations from 2012 to 2018. As the Systems Development Engineering Manager, they were in charge of designing and developing multiple systems to control heavy industry equipment, data capturing, remote data transfer, data consolidation, and custom report generation. As the Software Engineer, they designed and developed multiple systems to control heavy industry equipment, data capturing, and remote data transfer, including a communication program written in c# to transfer data to and from remote sites located all over South Africa.
Schalk van Heerden completed a Matric from Afrikaans hoer seunskool in 2007. Schalk then went on to pursue a Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) in Computer Engineering from the University of Pretoria/Universiteit van Pretoria, graduating in 2011. In 2012, they earned a Master's Degree in Computer Engineering from North-West University / Noordwes-Universiteit. Finally, in 2015, they achieved a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Computer Engineering from North-West University / Noordwes-Universiteit. Additionally, in October 2015, Schalk van Heerden was awarded a Pr. Eng. from the Engineering Council of South Africa.
