Carra Powell

Carra Powell has a diverse work experience spanning over two decades. Carra began their career as a Program Coordinator at the Mississippi Forum on Children and Families, where they implemented programming and created a database of resources to connect families with community support. Carra then served as the Mississippi Grassroots Coordinator and Mississippi Outreach Coordinator at the BLACK ALLIANCE FOR EDUCATIONAL OPTIONS, where they engaged in legislative and grassroots advocacy for parental choice and charter school acts.

Carra later joined the American Federation for Children as the Tennessee Grassroots Coordinator, where they coordinated community and legislative meetings and managed private school tours. Carra then became a Consultant at the Jubilee Catholic Schools Network, where they organized community events, assisted with school closure preparations, and helped pass the Compass Community Schools charter.

In 2019, Carra became the Founding Director of Enrollment and Family and Community Engagement at Compass Community Schools, responsible for student recruitment, managing enrollment targets, and building strategic partnerships. Carra currently serves as the Director of Policy and Advocacy at the Tennessee Charter School Center, where they act as a liaison between charter school leaders and the LEA, advocating for favorable policies and blocking harmful ones. Carra is also a registered Tennessee lobbyist.
