Karen Smith

Karen Smith is a seasoned professional with extensive experience in the arts and mindfulness sectors. As the Founder and Executive Director of We Wield the Hammer since January 2019, Karen promotes opportunities for young women of African descent in metalsmithing through training and project completion. In addition to leadership, Karen operates as a metal artist, designing and fabricating wearable art and sculptures from precious metals in Oakland, CA. Teaching as an instructor in The Crucible's jewelry department, Karen also previously worked as a Mindfulness Consultant at KMS Consulting and owned NuSpirit Designs, where focus was placed on mindfulness-related products and high-end jewelry. Academic background includes coursework toward a PhD in American Studies from the University of Iowa and a Bachelor's degree from UMass Boston in English, Women's Studies, and African American Studies.
