Alex Wegmann has a diverse background in the field of environmental conservation and research. They began their career in 2001 as a Biological Science Technician with the US Fish and Wildlife Service. From 2005 to 2015, they worked as a Program Manager for Island Conservation, focusing on Hawaii, US Pacific Islands, and Micronesia. In 2010, they became a Research Associate at the Institute of Marine Sciences at UC Santa Cruz. They then joined the University of Hawaii at Manoa as a Research Associate in 2013. From 2016 to 2019, Alex worked as the Palmyra Program Director and later as the Director of Science for The Nature Conservancy's Palmyra Program, managing the Palmyra Atoll National Wildlife Refuge. Currently, they hold the position of Lead Scientist - Island Resilience at The Nature Conservancy, focusing on priority conservation actions and ecosystem resilience to climate change impacts, particularly in Pacific islands and surrounding oceanscapes.
Alex Wegmann received a BA in Anthropology from Linfield University in 1998. Later, in 2000-2001, they pursued graduate coursework in Human Evolutionary Ecology at The University of New Mexico. In 2003-2009, they earned a PhD in Botany from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
