Shannon Douma

Shannon Douma has extensive work experience in the field of privacy and data protection. Shannon is currently a member of the Privacy Engineering Section Advisory Board at the IAPP - International Association of Privacy Professionals. In this role, they actively contribute to the development of programming and content for privacy engineering.

Prior to their current position, Douma worked at Thomson Reuters as the Lead for Data & Model Ethics in Privacy Engineering and Design. Shannon'sresponsibilities included ensuring ethical data practices and privacy compliance.

Douma also served as a Senior Manager of Privacy at Loblaw Companies Limited, where they played a key role in developing privacy frameworks and optimizing a healthcare journey app. Shannon had direct oversight of Loblaw's Health pillar and managed a team responsible for privacy controls and policies.

Before Loblaw, Douma worked as the Manager of Privacy at Cancer Care Ontario, where they developed organization-wide privacy and compliance policies in the healthcare sector. Shannon also co-chaired a committee for reviewing data disclosure requests.

Earlier in their career, Douma held roles at Mount Sinai Hospital (Toronto) and Borden Ladner Gervais LLP, where they gained experience in health privacy, risk management, and civil litigation.

Douma started their career as a Law Clerk at Leon Fazari LLP and Adams Leduc LLP, where they provided support in criminal, litigation, and family law cases.

Shannon Douma's education history is as follows:

Shannon obtained a Professional Paralegal (PP) certification from The Law Society of Upper Canada in March 2011. Shannon then attended Brock University from 2003 to 2006, where they earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. From 2006 to 2008, they attended Niagara College and studied Law Clerk. In 2010, they attended Algonquin College of Applied Arts and Technology for a Paralegal program. Most recently, they have been studying at the University of Toronto since 2015. Additionally, in 2023, they will be attending Cornell University to obtain a Certificate in Data Ethics.

Shannon Douma has also obtained several certifications, including: OneTrust Certified Privacy Professional from OneTrust in December 2022, Certified Data Privacy Solutions Engineer™ (CDPSE™) from ISACA in February 2021, Certified Information Privacy Professional/Europe (CIPP/E) from IAPP - International Association of Privacy Professionals in June 2020, Fellow of Information Privacy from IAPP - International Association of Privacy Professionals in February 2019, Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM) from IAPP - International Association of Privacy Professionals in August 2018, and Certified Information Privacy Professional/Canada (CIPP/C) from IAPP - International Association of Privacy Professionals in November 2017.
