John Douglas is Chief Legal, Risk and Compliance Officer for TIAA, returning to the position he held from May 2018 through September 2020. He also served as Senior Advisor to the CEO, assisting Thasunda Brown Duckett as she assumed her leadership position.
He has 40 years of experience advising financial institutions on legal, business and regulatory matters, including regulatory compliance, acquisitions, investments and FinTech. John has guided financial services companies through significant legislative and regulatory changes, from Garn-St. Germain to FIRREA to Dodd-Frank.
Prior to joining TIAA, he was a partner in Davis Polk’s Financial Institutions Group, heading the firm’s bank regulatory practice. During his tenure at the firm, John acted as a strategic legal advisor to TIAA regarding its 2017 acquisition of EverBank (now TIAA Bank). As General Counsel of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation in the 1980s, he supported the financial system through reform and restructuring efforts, participating in the landmark Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery and Enforcement Act of 1989 and assisting in the organization of the Resolution Trust Corporation.
