Karen Spurlin, SHRM-SCP, has over 30 years of experience in human resources, with a focus on employee relations, organizational development, and compliance with employment laws. Karen most recently served as Assistant Director of Human Resources for the Town of Apex. Prior to that, they worked as a Senior Human Resources Business Partner for the City of Raleigh Municipal Government, where they provided counseling to employees and managers on conflict resolution and ensured compliance with employment laws and policies. Karen also has experience as an Employee Relations Consultant, where they specialized in creating positive working relationships, resolving workplace challenges, and conducting investigations. Karen's earlier experience includes roles as an Employee Relations Manager for the Town of Cary and a Compliance Officer for the Florida Department of State. Karen began their career as Director and later Assistant Director of Human Resources for Tallahassee Community Hospital. Karen's extensive knowledge and experience make their well-equipped to handle diverse HR challenges.
Karen Spurlin, SHRM-SCP, obtained their Bachelor of Science degree in Management/Human Resource Management from Florida State University, which they completed between 1986 and 1988. Karen has also obtained additional certifications, including the SHRM - Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) from SHRM in March 2023. Additionally, they hold past certifications as a Professional in Human Resources (PHR) and a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR), both from SHRM. Furthermore, Karen Spurlin is a certified trainer for FranklinCovey's Project Management and The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People programs, as well as VitalSmarts' Crucial Accountability program.
