Philip Brotherton began their work experience as a Deck Hand on the Brigantine Romance from December 1982 to April 1983. Philip then worked as a 3rd Mate at Exxon Shipping Company in 1986. From 1987 to 1993, Philip worked at General Steamship Corp, starting as an apprentice agent and eventually becoming the District Manager for the company's largest volume office. In 1994, they joined Transmarine Navigation Corp as Vice President, Administration and was later promoted to Vice President Operations. In these roles, Philip integrated operations with finance and commercial departments, implemented new database programs, and applied cost control techniques to maximize profits. Philip continues to work at Transmarine Navigation Corp as Vice President Operations.
Philip Brotherton attended UC Santa Barbara from 1981 to 1982, studying Mechanical Engineering. Philip then went on to California State University Maritime Academy from 1983 to 1986, where they obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Transportation. In addition to their formal education, Philip also obtained Agent Certification from the Association of Shipbrokers and Agents (USA) Inc. in May 2005.
