Ian Palmer's work experience includes:
- Head of Modelling and Analysis at Transport for Greater Manchester (formerly GMPTE) since November 2003.
- Head of Strategic Analysis and Appraisal at Transport for the North (TfN) from April 2015 to March 2017. Ian played a key role in creating the analysis and evidence base for the development of the Northern Transport Strategy to achieve transformative economic growth.
- Consultant at MVA Consultancy from July 1999 to November 2003.
- Research Fellow at the University of Leeds from January 1993 to July 1999.
Ian Palmer attended Holy Family High School in Thornton, Liverpool from 1981 to 1988. After completing their high school education, they pursued a Joint Honours Degree in Mathematics and Geography from Newcastle University, which they completed from 1988 to 1991. Seeking further specialization, they then enrolled at the University of Leeds and obtained a Master's degree in Transport Planning and Engineering, graduating between the years 1993 and 1995.
