Jenny Smith has a diverse work experience spanning over several roles and companies. Jenny started their career in 1987 at Smith, British Nursing Association, where they held various roles. Jenny then worked at BT Global Solutions from 1988 to 2002, where they served as a Pay Plan Manager, responsible for managing sales pay plans and delivering accurate sales bonuses. From 2004 to 2005, they worked as an HR Business Partner at Global Solutions, focusing on effective people management within a flexible resourcing environment. Jenny then joined BT Global Services in 2005, where they served as an HR Global Customer Services. From 2006 to 2008, Jenny worked as an HR Business Partner at British Telecommunications, taking the lead in organizational development and communication aspects. Jenny then moved to BT Global Partners from 2008 to 2011 as an HR Business Partner, leading HR for the Global Partnering directorate and driving organizational development and culture change initiatives. At BT Business, they served as an HR Business Partner and HR Programme Lead from 2011 to 2014, where they contributed to business and HR strategy, delivered HR agendas, and managed resource programs. Jenny then joined Openreach in 2014 as a Senior HR Business Partner, responsible for developing strategic people plans and managing people engagement during business change. From 2015 to 2022, Jenny worked at Essex County Fire and Rescue Service as a Strategic Lead Business Partner. Currently, they are working at Trinity House as the Head of People Services since 2022.

Jenny Smith began their education in 1984 at Leeds General Infirmary, where they pursued a degree in Student Nursing. Jenny studied there for three years until 1987. In 2006, Jenny attended Anglia Ruskin University to pursue a degree in CIPD. Jenny completed their studies at Anglia Ruskin University in 2008.
