Shereef Elnahal currently serves as the Under Secretary for Health at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs since July 2022. Prior to this role, Elnahal was the President and CEO of University Hospital in Newark, where Elnahal oversaw the main academic medical center for Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, and previously held the position of New Jersey's Commissioner of Health under Governor Phil Murphy. Elnahal's academic involvement includes roles as a Clinical Associate Professor at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Georgetown University. Elnahal has extensive experience in health system delivery improvement, having served as the Assistant Deputy Under Secretary for Health, Quality, Safety, and Value at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, where Elnahal led initiatives on patient safety and care delivery improvements. Elnahal's medical training includes residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital and a Doctor of Medicine degree from Harvard Medical School, complemented by an MBA in Operations Management from Harvard Business School.
