Stephan Smith

Pro Bono Legal Counsel at UEFA

Stephan Smith has a diverse work experience in the legal and sports industry. Stephan currently works as a Senior Counsel at World Rugby, where they support the organization in achieving its regulatory and disciplinary goals. Stephan also provides legal advice and assists with project management.

In 2023, they also began working as an Independent Integrity Expert for FIFA, ensuring the integrity of the sport.

Prior to this, Stephan worked as Pro Bono Legal Counsel for UEFA in 2022, providing legal services on a voluntary basis.

From 2019, they have been actively involved with England Boxing Ltd, serving as the Chair and Panel Member for both the England Boxing National Disciplinary Panel and the England Boxing Safeguarding Review Panel.

Stephan's previous experience includes working as a Legal Counsel for The Football Association from 2013 to 2023, where they provided legal support on football regulatory matters and conducted investigations into misconduct cases.

Before joining The Football Association, they worked as a Solicitor at The Howard League for Penal Reform in 2013 and at Bindmans LLP from 2011 to 2012, specializing in public law, civil liberties, and human rights cases.

Stephan Smith's education history is as follows:

Stephan Smith attended Kadir Has University from 2021 to 2022, where they earned a Certificate of Advance Studies (CAS) in Football Law from the UEFA Football Law Programme. Their field of study was Sports Law.

Prior to that, Smith pursued a Master of Sports Law (LLM) from De Montfort University, which they completed from 2018 to 2021. Their specialization once again was in Sports Law.

In 2016 to 2017, Smith also attended De Montfort University, where they obtained a BASL / DMU Postgraduate Certificate in Sports Law.

Before their time at De Montfort University, Smith enrolled in The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) in 2012. Stephan completed a Certificate in International Human Rights Law and Practice.

Furthermore, in 2006, Smith attended The University of Law, where they obtained a Legal Practice Course certification in Law.

Lastly, Smith pursued their undergraduate studies at SOAS University of London from 2003 to 2005, earning a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree in Law.
