Chief, Commodity Research And Analysis Section at UNCTAD

Clovis Freire, PhD has a diverse and extensive work experience. Clovis is currently working at UNCTAD as the Chief of the Commodity Research and Analysis Section, where they lead a team of economists focused on studying how commodity-dependent countries can achieve sustainable development through economic diversification and structural change. Clovis collaborates closely with government officials to develop and implement economic diversification policies. Prior to this, they served as the Chief of the Technology and Innovation Policy Research Section at UNCTAD, where they led a team of economists conducting research on technology and innovation policies. Clovis also worked as an Economic Affairs Officer in multiple divisions at the United Nations, including the Division on Sustainable Development Goals and the Economic Affairs Division. Additionally, they have held various roles at United Nations ESCAP, including overseeing the production of flagship publications and providing economic advice to the Ministry of Finance of Timor-Leste. Clovis also has experience working in the private sector as the Director of Technology and Development at Altran/TCDI. Earlier in their career, they served in important roles at the Força Aérea Brasileira - FAB, specifically as Chief of the Network Security Section and Chief of the Intranet/Internet Section at the Technological Center of Brasilia.

Clovis Freire, PhD, has an extensive educational background. Clovis earned their Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering from Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica - ITA from 1992 to 1996. After that, they pursued their Master's degree in Computer Science from Universidade de Brasília from 2000 to 2001. Following their Master's, they completed an MBA in Administration of Information Systems at FGV - Fundação Getulio Vargas from 2002 to 2003. Finally, they attained their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Economics from United Nations University-MERIT, where they studied from 2012 to 2017.
