Kay Uchiyama

Dr. Kay Uchiyama joined the University of West Florida faculty as an instructor in the School of Education. She teaches undergraduate courses and supervises Field Experience 1 and FE.

Dr. Uchiyama received her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Florida State University, a master’s degree in education from the University of Tampa, and her doctoral degree from the University of Colorado. Dr. Uchiyama also hold as bachelor’s degree in German from the University of Maryland.

Dr. Uchiyama has a wealth of experience in education. The majority of her teaching experience was with the Department of Defense Dependents’ Schools in teaching the children of families stationed in Germany. She also has experience as a principal, a district office coordinator for assessment and accreditation and a consultant. In higher education she has taught courses in foundations, classroom management, and assessment as well as supervising student teachers in both elementary and secondary education.

Her research interests are in classroom assessment and teaching and learning in elementary mathematics. She has been published in several educational journals and co-authored chapter on classroom assessment in the Wiley-Blackwell Handbook on Teaching and Learning.

She is an active member in the American Educational Research Association, having served as the newsletter editor for the Multiple Intelligences Special Interest Group, the Classroom Assessment Special Interest Group Chairperson, and the Program Co-Chairperson for the Data Driven Decision Making Special Interest Group.
