Nick Kates

Nick Kates has extensive experience as a Chief Financial Officer in various organizations. Nick most recently held this role at the Upper Peninsula Power Company, starting in May 2023. Prior to that, they worked at Primeritus Financial Services as the CFO from March 2020 to August 2022, where they led the integration of acquired subsidiaries and the migration to a single operating platform.

From 2015 to 2020, Kates served as the CFO of Upper Peninsula Power Company and Upper Peninsula Power Holding Company, where they created systems and processes to maintain financial discipline in the newly spun-off utility company.

Before that, they were the CFO of DSM Functional Materials from 2012 to 2015, leading financial strategies, IT, and M&A activities in a global high-tech organization. From 2008 to 2012, Kates worked as the Vice President of Finance/Corporate Controller at Dickey-John Corporation, responsible for financial planning, budgeting, and operations.

During their career, Kates also worked as a Wealth Management Consultant at UBS Financial Services from 2005 to 2008, and as a Manager of Financial Planning & Analysis at Ideal Industries from 1999 to 2005. Nick began their career as a Finance Manager at Tate & Lyle in 1998 and as an Accounting Manager at Fiskars in 1996.

Nick Kates completed their education from Millikin University. Nick earned a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Accounting and Art History from 1987 to 1991. Later, they pursued an MBA in International Business and Organizational Behavior from 2008 to 2010.
