Nancy Johnson

Research Associate at Vavarde Strategic Funding

Dr. Nancy B. Johnson has worked with information and documentation for over 45 years. She holds a Ph.D. in Library and Information Science from the University of Michigan; her MLIS is also from U-M. Dr. Johnson carries a Michigan Permanent Professional Librarian Certificate. She graduated from Oberlin College with a BA in English Literature and a profound interest in the liberal arts.

She writes and edits in the non-profit and training areas, assisting with presentations, documentation, scholarly publications, and board reports. Grant proposals she edited successfully procured funding from senior services coalitions for publications, state and federal funds for public computing equipment, and American Library Association support for arts-based library programming. Dr. Johnson has published research articles about library education and the history of library funding in the United States.

Johnson has experience with academic, public, school, and special libraries, ranging across most aspects of public and technical services. At mid-career, she took that experience into the graduate education classroom at Syracuse University, the University of Missouri, the University of Arizona, and Wayne State University. She was a leader in the first WICHE-distributed television teaching program at Arizona and has won several teaching awards at both the departmental and university-wide levels.

After her success in the classroom, Dr. Johnson returned to practice, providing leadership at the local, state, and national levels through professional associations and non-profit philanthropic organizations. She led two overwhelmingly successful millage campaigns for public libraries in financially conservative communities, supporting an elected Board of Trustees and a cohort of volunteers through all aspects of each campaign.

Dr. Johnson is a teacher, mentor, and pragmatic leader who has worked with planning, budgeting, fundraising, communications, and non-profit administration to implement strategic initiatives while protecting core services.
