James Dean began their professional career in 2000 as a Project Engineer II with Aerotek Engineering, providing power systems testing support for X38 Crew Return Vehicle. In 2003, they joined Lockheed Martin - SEAT Contract as a Project Engineer III, continuing support for the MELFI project and developing control and data acquisition systems for a variety of NASA test articles. In 2004, they moved to Jacobs Technology - ESCG Contract as a Controls + Instrumentation Engineer, developing data acquisition and control systems for thermal and vacuum test facilities at Johnson Space Center. In 2012, they joined Optimation Technology, Inc. as a Systems Developer, providing system integration services for a variety of industries. In 2014, they co-founded Vertical Automation & Information Technology, a company focused on merging the gap between technical and business concerns by offering Vertical Integration of hardware or embedded devices.

James Dean attended the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science from 1994 to 1996. James then studied Physics with minors in Mathematics and Electrical Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin from 1996 to 2000, earning a Baccalaureate degree. In 2009, they went on to study Physics at University of Houston-Clear Lake, completing their Post-Baccalaureate degree in 2011. Additionally, James Dean has obtained three certifications from National Instruments: Certified LabVIEW Architect in 2016, Certified Professional Instructor in 2014, and Certified LabVIEW Developer in 2014.
