Joel Urban, CEM, CEA has over 20 years of work experience in a variety of technical roles. In 2021, they began working as a Lead Onboarding Engineer / Senior Product Engineer at Virtual Facility. From 2017-2021, they worked at Building Clarity in roles such as IoT Connectivity & Integrations Manager, IoT Implementation Manager, and Innovation Architect. From 2015-2017, they worked at Brady in roles such as IoT Connectivity & Integrations Manager, IoT Implementation Manager, Director of Quality Assurance/Director of Analytical Services, and Quality Assurance Program Leader. From 2015-2016, they were an Energy and M&V Consultant at BDA Global. From 2010-2015, they were a Measurement & Verification (M&V) Engineer at Pepco Energy Services. From 2008-2010, they were a Meteorology & Oceanography Officer (LT) in the U.S. Navy Reserve. From 2007-2008, they were an Ice Products Branch Chief (NOAA) and Assistant Operations Officer (US Navy) at the National Ice Center. From 2004-2007, they were a Personnel Supervisor/Curriculum Development and Aviation Student at the U.S. Navy. From 2000-2004, they were a Research Assistant at Villanova University. From 1999-2000, they were a US Navy Radioman, ET2 at USS Toledo SSN 769.

Joel Urban, CEM, CEA has a diverse education background. Joel obtained a B.S. in Astronomy & Astrophysics from Villanova University between 1999 and 2004. Joel also received extensive US Navy training between 1996 and 2011 in Electrical, Electronics & Communications Engineering; Leadership & Mgmt; and Meteorology & Oceanography. In 2008, they attended George Mason University for a course in Satellite Imagery Analysis. In 2017, they completed a course with SAS Institute, Inc. Additionally, they have obtained several certifications from various institutions, such as Niagara 4 Technical Certification from Tridium (2020), EPA 608 Universal Technician Certification from American Trainco, Inc. (2011), OSHA 10-hour General Industry Safety and Health from OSHA (2010), Certified Bartender from Raleigh's Bartending School (2001), Certified Energy Auditor (CEA) and Certified Energy Manager (CEM) from Association of Energy Engineers (2010 and 2014, respectively), Certified Commissioning Professional (CCP) from Building Commissioning Certification Board (2016), Certified Building Commissioning Professional (CBCP) from Association of Energy Engineers (2015), and Certified Measurement and Verification Professional (CMVP) from Association of Energy Engineers (2011).
