Max Smalley has held a variety of positions in the software engineering and product management fields. In 2021, they began working as an Embedded System Engineer at Vitalacy, Inc., where they design and implements thread safe firmware for medical devices. From 2020 to 2021, they worked as a Billing Analyst at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where they were responsible for collecting, verifying, and distributing utility bills. In 2019, they worked as an Embedded Systems Engineer at Aeroasis, PBC. From 2017 to 2018, they were a Product Management Intern at ShipCompliant by Sovos, where they led JIRA ticket review meetings, developed a tax savings calculator, and followed Agile Software Development practices. Finally, in 2016, they were a Software Development Intern at Hunter Industries, where they worked with a team to create an app that automates API coding.

Max Smalley completed their Robotics Engineering degree from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 2019. Theirfield of study was Mechatronics, Robotics, and Automation Engineering, and they graduated in four years, beginning in 2015.
